Show Design - Power Hour

Power Hour - Show Opener - November 2024 Edition

The task…

I recieved a brief for a total ground-up show design package for a new digital exclusive program for Sky News Australia. The show would be hosted by Gabriella Power and would feature current events, opinion and lifestyle sections.

The total package included a branding package with logo, colour palette and design aesthetic, a templatable show opener which would need to be progressively updated with contemporary and relevant imagery and a studio design. Scope of the project also included some videography and photography for marketing material which I also delivered. Finally, a youtube thumbnail aesthetic was requested to maximise engagement on online platforms.

The show has developed into a major success for the network, with views averaging 1.5-2 million views per weekly episode.

See below for a further breakdown of elements.

Branding…

Branding a show package for Sky News Australia’s digital department afforded me some more leeway in regards to branding guidelines. For instance, discussions with stakeholders revealed a desire for a “pastel” colour palette, differentiating from Sky News Australia’s bold official brand. I achieved this aim by “mellowing” the official Sky News brand colour palette, keeping a balance between warm and cool.

I aimed to create a logo that would be tasteful on its own and that could be animated in a tasteful way. I’ve maintained brand style guidelines for font, making use of the incredibly versatile Roboto typeface.

The clock motif has been used to frame the type and emphasise the time factor in the design. This motif would go on to inform design choices in both my studio design and motion graphic elements.

Studio Design…

An integral part of show design is the creation of the actual studio.

The imperative in this case was to create a balance between the opinion and news paradigms.

I’ve achieved design harmony with the rest of the show package by integrating the pastel colour palette and incorporating the clock motif.

To complete the design, I ensured that the studio’s aesthetic remains versatile yet distinctive, allowing it to adapt seamlessly to the show's evolving themes and topics. The use of geometric patterns and pastel tones creates a polished and professional backdrop, enhancing the visual appeal without overpowering the content. This cohesive approach not only reinforces the show's identity but also ensures a consistent and engaging experience for viewers.
